Florida A&M University (FAMU) is excited to unveil a statue honoring the late Dr. Frederick S. Humphries. Humphries served as the eighth President of Florida A&M University from June 1, 1985 to December 31, 2001. Under his motto of "Excellence With Caring," he worked with administrators, faculty, staff, students, alumni, the corporate world, and other supporters of FAMU. As a result, under the Humphries administration, FAMU continuously improved its image and gained increasing recognition on the state, national, and international levels.

Your generosity has lifted a statue—and with it, the spirit of a man whose life’s work was lifting others. Our family is profoundly grateful for the gifts that made the monument to Dr. Frederick S. Humphries a reality. You have given FAMU a lasting place to remember, reflect, and be inspired by his guiding creed: “Excellence with Caring.”
Our father’s presidency blossomed on five pillars that you now help preserve:
- Life Gets Better Scholars – a trailblazing partnership with more than 80 corporations that became the era’s greatest assembly of Black academic talent.
- Enrollment & Rising Standards – student numbers more than doubled while entrance scores climbed, proving that access and excellence can grow together.
- Graduate School Feeder Program – a pipeline that has carried thousands of Rattlers into master’s and doctoral halls across the nation.
- TIME/Princeton Review College of the Year (1997) – national recognition that broadcast FAMU’s merit to the world.
- Restoration of the College of Law (2000) – reopening a gateway for Black legal leadership and justice-focused service.
When our father announced his retirement, he said he was leaving “in the springtime.” Your gifts ensure that springtime is permanent at FAMU - a season where opportunity keeps blooming and every new student feels the warmth of Excellence with Caring he cultivated.

DONOR RECOGNITION
Thank you to all who contributed to the fundraising campaigns launched in the summer of 2021 in honor of the late Frederick S. Humphries, Ph.D. Each gift made in his name reflects a deep respect for a leader whose influence shaped generations and expanded opportunities in higher education.
In recognition of Dr. Humphries’ extraordinary legacy, several commemorative efforts were initiated—among them, the Life Gets Better Endowment, the Dr. Frederick S. Humphries Endowed Chair, and the Dr. Frederick Humphries Graduate Feeder Program Endowment, and the campaign supporting the creation of a statue to celebrate his life and achievements. While these efforts have not yet reached the level of full endowments, every contribution plays a vital role in advancing the vision he championed. Your contributions help ensure that his story, and the opportunities he championed, continue to uplift future generations.
These gifts serve as a powerful reminder of the impact one life can have, and of the many who continue to believe in that legacy. To all who gave in his honor, thank you for helping ensure that Dr. Humphries’ spirit of excellence, equity, and leadership continues to inspire future generations.
