The university's vision for the new, two-story, 40,000-square-foot Cici & Hyatt Brown Hall for Health & Innovation has come to life, with spaces and experiences that allow ideas, learning and interests to converge and evolve into ground-breaking discoveries and innovative pedagogy. The design of the new facility encourages spontaneous collaborations that are critical for interdisciplinary discoveries.
The ultimate goals of Brown Hall are to help elevate Stetson's presence in health sciences and the natural sciences; attract more top-notch students, faculty and researchers; increase student interest in science; increase Stetson’s competitiveness for research grant funding opportunities; accelerate the readiness of students to meet the academic demands of health professional schools; and improve the health outcomes of Volusia County and the larger community through community engagement.

Teaching Kitchen Lab

The Teaching Kitchen supports hands-on experiential learning connected to the Sustainable Food Systems program, Health Sciences, Chemistry and Counselor Education. Blending commercial and residential kitchen elements, the Teaching Kitchen contains cooking stations for classroom demonstrations, a wide range of equipment and appliances and additional seating space. Our Sustainable Food Systems program leverages this teaching kitchen to prepare students for complex global challenges related to a sustainable, equitable and healthy food future.
Wet Teaching Labs
Wet teaching labs enhance the curriculum of the Environmental Science and Studies Department. The labs house equipment used in soil and water sampling and analysis, environmental surveying, and other hands-on training for students.

Varied configurations of study spaces are situated in and around the lobby, near the reception area where Brown Hall and Sage Hall connect. The openness of the building’s design extends to the open staircase, which guides traffic upstairs while encouraging interaction among community members.

ENSS Field Studies Lab (2)

The labs house equipment used in soil and water sampling and analysis, environmental surveying and other hands-on training for students. One of the labs allows field specimens to be brought into the building for use in lab spaces.
Greenhouse

The new greenhouse, with an internal shade system and a butterfly roof to facilitate rainwater collection, houses plants and seedlings for classes and research. As well as for planting in the Teaching Garden. Shared by the Biology and Environmental Science and Studies departments, the greenhouse has two separate rooms that is independently controlled to manage temperature, humidity and light conditions. State-of-the-art control systems is monitored remotely through apps that faculty using the greenhouse keep on their laptops or smart phones.

Growth chambers control light, temperature and humidity levels for a variety of organisms, including plants and insects. Having two chambers makes it possible for students to manipulate environmental variables to compare their effects on study organisms.

Smart Lab

The SMART Lab, part of the Center for Optimal Health Across the Lifespan (COHL), is designed to teach and research the efficacy of stress management and resiliency skills within the Volusia County population and Stetson’s student body. The lab targets significant reductions in stress levels, using biofeedback monitors, and is combined with self-report measures of psychological disorders and indicators of resilience. The SMART Lab is capable of intervening with a wide age of demographics, from children to geriatric, and is combined with other health initiatives.
GIS (Geographical Information Systems) Lab

The GIS (geographical information systems) classroom and lab support efforts to emphasize GIS in student training with over a dozen state-of-the-art computers for teaching digital mapping and spatial analysis; it is an essential skill for employment in numerous environmental-related fields. THE ENSS Faculty Research Pod within the lab is the site of research activity and collaborations using GIS and other equipment and software.
